Greetings from Manhattan!

Emah outside of City Lights Bookstore, San Francisco, CA

oh so much so much to say!

I WILL make another vlog shortly (first one is up at http://www.youtube.com/emahfox) but tonight I just feel the urge for some good ole fashioned writing... and since I am being lame and piking on a wild new york party for the second weekend in a row, turns out I have ample time...

yes, I know I shouldn't be wasting a minute of manhattan madness, but I just don't feel like being around drugged-up craziness to be honest!

soooo... travel has been amazing so far. new york is my last stop in america (been to san francisco, los angeles, las vegas and austin before that) and in september I head to europe... a whole other experience, I'm sure!

where do I begin? well... you might know I was somewhat nervous about it all, never having ventured into the big world before, and after a gruelling year in 2008. good news is, I find I am mos def up to the challenge and am not only surviving but thriving on the constant changes and challenges :)

I've met some incredible people long the way, and new york in particular has been fascinating for the sheer numbers of creative interesting folk concentrated here... I've been meeting them even quite randomly, on the subway, on the street, in bars - all very talented and inspiring.

AND I've been lucky enough to be playing my music on the other side of the globe, and meeting some of the people who have written to me saying how much it means to them. please if this is you and you make it to a show, come up & say hi, I'm very friendly and I would love to meet you :)

I feel incredibly blessed right now, and it's all the better because I know I allowed this to happen by deciding not to limit myself with fear or with other's ideas of what is and isn't realistic to aim for. verdict? don't listen to the naysayers - just aim for the f***ing stars! :)

lots of exciting things coming up...

the clip for 'need you tonight' just got picked up by the Sexy International Film Festival - coming soon to Melbourne, Los Angeles, New York and Paris... and if you haven't seen it yet, head to youtube for all its sexy zombie glory :) keep an eye out for screenings, I'll update as soon as I have times confirmed!

speaking of clips, I'm shooting a filmclip for '6.13am' this week atop an abandoned manhattan rooftop - it's one of my favourite tracks from the new album and I'm really excited about it!

also coming up, earlier in the year I wrote and recorded a song for dj spooky's new album, due out in october. the album also features thurston moore, jungle brothers and more, as well as remixes of the likes of radiohead and led zeppelin... I've heard the full album and it's awesome. you can read about it here:

dj spooky - the secret song

and keep an eye out for events/showcases around the globe when it gets released! (and of course, I'll tell you bout any I'm in ;)

all in all, I'm pretty pleased with how this whole life thing is going right now :) that said, having proven to myself that I can self-release and self-manage (and do it well I think!) I'd happily welcome a good experienced manager at this point, so I can concentrate more on the creative business rather than the business business! hmmm something to think about...

I have a lot more to say... about the nature of happiness, and work, and how the two relate... and the flipside too... been meaning to talk about depression for a while as I had it bigtime last year & I know a lot of my fans have too! (depressed people like my music? well I never!) but that will have to wait for another day...

anyway, thanks guys for bearing with my ruminations as always...

if you're in new york, I have a couple of shows left - this friday 21st august @ sidewalk cafe in east village, and then wednesday 26 august @ bar 4 in brooklyn. would love to see you there!

(cheap cds & orisha tees available at shows :)

will write again soon - and vlog too! gonna upload some travel pics now so you can see some of what I've been doing...

Hello America!

Emah outside of City Lights Bookstore, San Francisco, CA

Just landed in San Francisco this morning... it's oh so sunny and lovely... next week, L.A. and my first ever U.S. show!

I want to thank you all so much for all your patience and support in waiting for this album and this tour. I'm so looking forward to bringing the live version of Orisha to you!

I'm mostly playing major cities as it's my first time touring and I'm testing the waters - but I know that a lot of you aren't in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Berlin, London... and I promise you it's not that I'm ignoring you! I would love love LOVE to do a more comprehensive tour - but I need your help to make it possible!

You might not know that I am a completely independent musician - I am my own record label, my own manager etc... It means I get to keep total creative control, but it's a lot of work & I rely enormously on my fans helping as much as they can by spreading the word! So please, don't keep the Orisha love to yourself - help me get the word out there because the more buzz there is the easier it will be for me to come and play in your hometown, which I really really want to do!

Obviously the more successful this tour is, the more likely it is I can expand on the next, and the more successful this album is, the sooner the next one will be out! (which I've started recording demos for… and am really happy with so far!)

How can you help? In so many ways!

  • Join the Orisha mailing list, and put yourself down as both a fan and streetteam if you're interested in helping out with things like poster runs & competitions…
  • Contact your local indie or college radio station and request that they add Orisha to their rotation. If they happen to not have a copy of the cd, let me know and I'll get one to them.
  • If I'm playing a show in your town, come and bring your friends! If it's too far for you to make it, but you have friends who live closer, tell them about Orisha - if you send a friend along to a gig you can ask them to get a cd or tee-shirt signed for you, and pick up some free Orisha stickers
  • If you have a music blog, or if you write for your local music rag, write an album review or an article. I'm always happy to do interviews by phone or email, so even if we're in different states it can be done! And if I'm heading to your town, write a review of the live show. Every bit of press helps, and that means you! If you don't write for any mags but you love the albums, hop onto retail sites like CD Baby, Amazon etc and write a customer review. All of these things really make a difference.
  • Spread the Orisha love by telling people on your social networks and forums what you've been listening to. Wear an Orisha tee-shirt, put an Orisha sticker on your backpack or your guitarcase…
  • Add an Orisha song or filmclip on your profile - and join me on Facebook and twitter. Send all your friends links to Orisha's Youtube clips and tell them why you think they'll like it.

Write to me and let me know how you're helping so I can thank you! I truly truly appreciate all your messages.I'm so excited to finally have this album out and to be heading out into the world to play it to you. Thank you all so much for helping me get to this point. I know it wouldn't be possible without you.

Oh, and if you come to a show please don't be shy - come up & introduce yourself!

Love Emah
